History was on the side of South American tandem Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria, And please don’t forget Paris Saint Germain.
Cavani, from Uruguay, and Di Maria, from Argentina, shared the starring role with Germany’s Julian Draxler as they powered PSG to a rousing 4-1 victory over Monaco in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.
It was PSG’s fourth consecutive crown in the tournament, a record in France that will surely be cherished by Cavani, Di Maria, Draxler and the whole PSG organisation.
The reigning Ligue 1 champions looked every bit not yet ready to give up the crown, sending signal to their opponents that they remain the biggest force in the country.
Cavani scored a brace (54th and 90th minute), while Di Maria struck in the 44th, with Draxler sending PSG off to a flying start with an early goal coming in the 4th minute. Monaco levelled through Thomas Lenar for 1-1 before Di Maria and Cavani delivered the coup de grace.
Di Maria set up the goals of Draxler and Cavani in his last conversion that sealed the scoreline, while Marco Verratti assisted the Argentine playmaker in finding the back of the net.
That Coupe de la Ligue feat won’t be enough though if you would ask manager Unai Emery.
Surely, they would be targeting a League 1 glory now that their spirits are on an ultimate high.
As things stand now, PSG are three points behind Monaco at present, with eight crucial games left to be fought.
Should PSG eventually be crowned league winners again, they would snare the trophy for five straight years.
With the way they are playing, that could be well within reach and in the bag for the capital side in the final reckoning.
Do we hear their fans answering “Oui’’ in unison?
