It will be boxing meets mixed martial arts when Floyd Mayweather tests the mettle of equally-arrogant Conor McGregor in their much-hyped collision on August 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
As well all know by now, boxing rules will be implemented, prompting many to say Mayweather will beat the pulp out of McGregor.
But if you ask the Irishman’s coach, he is sure his ward will prevail.
In fact, Owen Roddy is not even thinking the fight going the other way.
In a recent interview during the MMA hour, Roddy said: “I have no doubt in my mind he’s (Mcgregor) gonna do it.’’
Roddy went on to say it’s going to be one of the “most insane nights ever.’’
Mayweather is coming in as heavy favorite because McGregor has no professional boxing experience although he is the reigning UFC lightweight champion.
Floyd happens to be one of the best boxers of all time, a defensive genius who has toyed around with the best fighters of his generation.
During the fight, McGregor will be wearing 10-ounce boxing gloves, not the four-ounce gloves he wears for MMA.
Even so, McGregor’s power won’t diminish, according to Roddy.
Mayweather is 49-0 win-loss; McGregor is 0-0.
Looking at that, the Irishman seems to need a miracle to beat the tall odds.
But Roddy insists his disciple will emerge victorious, as he has seen the latter do the impossible in his career, including knocking out all-time great Joe Aldo in 13 seconds.
A tall task indeed, according to Roddy but he stressed: “if anybody could do it, Conor can. He shocks the world every time. Every time he fights he’s doubted, people are like, `You can’t do this, you can’t do that. We know what Conor is capable of. Conor does it every time.’’
Roddy is also predicting a McGregor win in style.
He added it will be a massive one because he said his fighter will knock Mayweather out.
And to back this up, McGregor, who has also gained fame because of his infamous predictive powers, himself sees a devastating knockout win over the boxing legend.
In fact, he has painted a wall in his boxing gym in Dublin depicting him landing a massive left to the face of Mayweather. He also posed in front of the painting and captioned it with “I am a filthy Irish animal.’’
“I think McGregor’s gonna put Mayweather away,’’ Roddy said. “I think he’s gonna KO him. I think it’ll take a couple of rounds. And I know my phone is about to explode, I’m sure. But look, Conor does these things. He does these exceptional things all the time. If he says he’s gonna go in and knock him out, I think he’s gonna go in and knock him out.’’
This Roddy, very much like Mayweather and McGregor, is a loudmouth personified.
The coming fight needs hype like what Roddy has blurted out.
If Conor wins, he will consider it as “largest upset that will shock the world.’’
Let’s see. But in the meantime, we’ll be waiting and come fight time, we’ll see if this motormouth’s prediction is answered by the boxing gods.
