Wayne Rooney eager to aid United’s cause

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney says he is looking forward to helping the club fight for silverware after confirming he will not be leaving this month.

Rooney appeared to be on the way out of Old Trafford this month after reports on Thursday confirmed his agent, Paul Stretford, had travelled to China to discuss a possible move.

The England international has found starting opportunities hard to come by under manager Jose Mourinho this term and the forward has made just eight Premier League starts.

Many believed a big-money move would happen before the end of the month but the Red Devils skipper revealed late on Thursday night that he will be staying.

“I hope I will play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts,” the statement from Rooney read. “It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.”

This still could be Rooney’s final season with the 20-time English champions and he will be hoping to add more silverware to his collection before potentially leaving for new pastures.

United are still challenging for four trophies and they take on Southampton, who beat Sunderland 4-0 last time out, in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Mourinho’s men are also sitting sixth in the Premier League, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea, and the Red Devils are priced at 36.00 to win the title.

The FA Cup is also a possible avenue for silverware and the defending champions, who beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in the previous final, are 7.00 to repeat the feat after booking their place in the quarter-final stage of the competition recently.
