Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) clashed in the 47th match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday, May 4, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
KKR emerged victorious as SRH failed to chase down the target set by KKR, losing by five runs in a last-over thriller. KKR’s Varun Chakravarthy played a crucial role in the win, defending the target in the final over and earning himself the Player of the Match award. Reflecting on his match-winning performance, Chakravarthy said in the post-match presentation, “My heartbeat was touching 200 in the last over, but I wanted them to make hit to the longer part of the ground. The ball was slipping a lot, and my best bet was the longer side, and that was my only hope.”
Chakravarthy also talked about his previous IPL performances and how he worked on improving his ball revolutions to achieve the desired results this season. “My first over I went for 12 runs, Markram hit me for two fours, and that’s how the game goes,” he said. “Last year I was bowling around 85kmph, I was trying out many things, and I realized that I needed to work on my revolutions, and I did work on it.”
KKR captain Nitish Rana won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite losing early wickets, KKR managed to post a competitive total of 171 runs, thanks to the brilliant performances of Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh. In response, SRH put up a good fight but were restricted to 166, falling short of the target. Get all the latest updates from IPL 2023 only on NextBet Sports.
After the game, Rana praised his team’s efforts, saying, “It was a team effort. We kept fighting, and that’s what I love about this team.” He also commended Chakravarthy’s performance, saying, “He’s been bowling well for us, and I had faith in him to deliver in the last over.”
