Arsenal are on course for their first Premier League title in nearly two decades and after a spectacular start to the season, the hierarchy of the club are leaving no stone unturned to ensure Mikel Arteta gets all he wants to secure the title. Having already added Leandro Trossard from Brighton & Hove Albion to their roster, they have now completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.
Jorginho, who won the Champions League and Club World Cup with Chelsea alongside the UEFA Euro 2021 with Italy, was entering the final five months of his contract. To avoid the player leaving on a free transfer, the Blues of London decided to coup up on this opportunity and agreed a £12 million fee to sign the Italian.
The defensive midfielder has made 213 appearances for Chelsea since joining them under the tenure of Maurizio Sarri. He scored 29 times for the club, 21 of which came in the Premier League. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was delighted to welcome Jorginho into the Gunners’ dressing room and said that his hunger and willingness to contribute will be a big addition for the club.
“Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience. Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club,” said Mikel Arteta after the transfer was completed.
The deal took a lot of fans by surprise, as Arsenal looked destined to complete the signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton. However, the Sea Gulls were not putting their foot off the pedal and wanted to keep the Ecuadorian midfielder with them, despite the Gunners showing keen interest on paying a club record fee up to £80 million.
Arteta already has a powerhouse defensive midfielder in Thomas Partey, but with some big games coming up in the Premier League, including two games against title rivals Manchester City, the addition of Jorginho gives him extra depth in the midfield. Jorginho could be making his debut against Everton on Saturday.
