Sergio Busquets has been one of the most decorated players in Spanish history and his achievements with Barcelona are the stuff of dreams for many footballers. The 34-year-old midfielder, however, is reaching the final few months of his playing time in Camp Nou and the club is actively looking out for new options.

Busquets is expected to move to MLS next summer, with reports suggesting that Inter Miami is keen on signing the player. Although there is no confirmation on where he will be next season, it could be highly unlikely for him to feature in Xavi’s team next year.

The Catalan giants are weighing up two players to replace one of the greatest defensive midfielders. According to Marca, Ruben Neves from Wolverhampton Wanderers in England has been high up on the radar for many clubs across the globe. It is being touted that Barca could lure the Portuguese midfielder away from Wolves if the correct bid is made.

Ruben Neves is renowned for his ability to control a game’s tempo and move the ball forward. He is also a stringent presence in the defense, making him a perfect choice to replace Busquets.

Another footballer high up in Barcelona’s consideration next summer is Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad, also reported by Marca. Zubimendi has been attracting a lot of attention ever since he had a breakthrough season with Sociedad in 2020/21 and has an exit clause of 60 million euros, which could be negotiated if Barca is really keen on moving for him.

Barcelona made one major signing in the midfield, getting Franck Kessie from AC Milan. Kessie was coming off a league triumph with the Italian club and although he isn’t a like-for-like replacement of Busquets, he is expected to be a major presence in their midfield alongside Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, and Busquets himself.

Xavi’s side is off to a flying start in the league, conceding just one goal in the opening seven games and breathing right down the neck of defending champions Real Madrid. Despite losing their away clash against Bayern Munich, Barcelona is expected to enter the round of 16 ahead of Inter Milan.
