Darron Gibson impressed by team spirit

Sunderland midfielder Darron Gibson has admitted the team spirit within the squad is still high as they look to avoid relegation this season.

The Black Cats are still rock bottom of the Premier League and face a tough battle to stay in the top flight with 11 games remaining.

David Moyes’ side have only picked up 19 points from their first 27 games but Gibson insists the mood amongst the players is positive.

They are currently six points away from safety, but Saturday’s results could see them drop even further behind with a game in hand.

Sunderland only have one more game in March, with their home clash with Burnley on March 18 set to be crucial to their survival chances.

For the last five years Sunderland have struggled at the bottom of the table but Gibson insists the players remain confident of staying up.

He told the club’s official website: “There’s a good team spirit in the dressing room and a great attitude.

“I didn’t think the spirit would be as good as it is but the spirits are high and hopefully now after that trip away we can kick on and get some results.

We’ve been in worse positions and done it and it’s still very tight at the bottom of the league.

“Anything can happen and if we get a few wins then pressure will be massively on the other teams.”

Sunderland’s home advantage makes them 2.40 favourites to beat Burnley, with the draw 3.20, while the Clarets are 2.88 to win.
