Dortmund, Bayern expected to coast past minnows in DFB-Pokal 1st-round opener

German football Giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich will face lightweight clubs when they start their campaign in the 2017-18 DFB Pokal.

Holders Dortmund face minnows Rielasingen-Arlen in the first round, while Bayern Munich travel to Chemnitzer.

Dortmund defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in last May’s final under manager Thomas Tuchel.

His successor, Peter Bosz, will now attempt to emulate his feat.

Rielasingen-Arlen advanced to the tournament with victory in last season’s South Baden Cup.

Their reward was an encounter with Dortmund at Schwarzwald Stadion on August 12.

Meanwhile, Bundesliga champions Bayern battle hosts Chemnitzer, a third-tier club who won the Saxony Cup, at the community4you Arena, also on the same day.

The matches will serve as warmups for both Bayern and Dortmund in the top-tier Bundesliga which unfold on August 19.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side launch their title defence at Allianz Arena against Bayer Leverkusen.

On the other hand, Dortmund begin their campaign at Wolfsburg.

For their first-round opening matches in the DFB Pokal, both Dortmund and Bayern can afford to field an under-strength lineup.

Bayern have the most titles in the DFB Pokal with 18, while Dortmund have four. The last trophy for Bayern came in 2015 when they beat Dortmund 4-3 on penalties after normal time ended in a scoreless draw.

Although upsets cannot be discounted, Dortmund and Bayern will surely go for the win in order to get their spirit soaring come the real deal.

We expect the two Titans of Bundesliga to get the three points in easy fashions.
