The PES League World Tour 2018 has been designated as the official UEFA Champions League esports competition.
The welcome boost to the sport of football was announced on Tuesday by Konami Digital Entertainment B.V.
Konami has been pooling resources with UEFA, governing body of football in Europe for the recreation of the UEFA Champions League through a licence deal.
Both groups agreed a three-year extension to the exclusive deal in 2015.
The exclusive and official connection to the UEFA Champions League means facing opportunities and challenges to meet the demands of esports.
Guy-Laurent Epstein, UEFA Events SA Marketing Director said they look forward to this season’s PES eSports events and the opportunity it provides for gamers and viewers to further engage with the UEFA Champions League brand.
For their part President of Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. Hideki Hayakawa said: “I am delighted to be able to work with UEFA for this opportunity not only to bring an exciting experience for the participating players, but to also be able to provide Football fans from all over the world an opportunity to enjoy this competition first-hand at the physical events or through live streams.’’
Esports analysts said the old enemies of FIFA and PES look set to go head to head with their esports agendas with the release of their new editions.
It is expected that the PES League World Tour 2018 will attract some attention as the official esports competition of the Champions League.
The PES World Tour will determine the best Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 player in the world.
It kicks off with qualifiers in winter 2017, followed by two global competitions in 2018.
Tournament participants will be determined by the number of Tour points they earned.
Beside the traditional 1v1 tournament, a CO-OP event will also be contested.
The top-finishing players advance to the finals in summer 2018 to face the best PES player in the world.
Despite some anxious moments, it is predicted to gain numerous viewers and generate more top esports action.
