Everton handed Baines boost

Everton have been boosted by the return to training of full-back Leighton Baines, who has been out of action since the opening weekend of the season.

The England international sustained an ankle injury that required surgery during the Toffees curtain raiser against Watford in August, but he is now edging closer to a first-team return.

The 30-year-old has returned to training earlier than expected and boss Roberto Martinez believes the defender’s hard work and natural fitness have been contributing factors to his speedy recovery.

Martinez said: “Naturally he is very fit and in great condition. The attitude of working hard and following the programmes of the medical department is important but I would highlight the natural condition.”

The Spaniard is now hoping that his first-choice left-back can return to action sooner rather than later, as the Toffees look to end a barren spell that has seen them go a month without a league victory.

He added: “Now we need to see how quickly he can get back to full fitness and how quickly he can be involved in the squad for selection.”

The Blues do not have a good recent record against the North East club though, as they have only won one of the last five meetings between the two sides, with their last home victory in the fixture coming nearly three years ago.
