FIFA order replay of `manipulated’ South Africa-Senegal qualifier

There will be a replay of the South Africa-Senegal qualification match held last November.

This was announced on Thursday by the Bureau for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The exact date will be decided upon during the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions meeting this September 14.

It is expected the replay will take place in the international window in November or one month before the 2018 World Cup draw.

FIFA ordered the replay following the “match manipulation’’ by match referee Joseph Lamptey in the game South Africa won at home 2-1. Lamptey has since been banned for life.

South Africa said they may appeal against the FIFA decision.

“We’re grappling for answers and asking FIFA for them before we decide whether to take the matter forward,’’ said South African FA lawyer Norman Arendse.

Arendse, chairman of the legal committee of the South African Football Association (Safa), said his organisation were not advised by FIFA how the match was fixed.

FIFA, in a letter to Safa, confirmed that “neither Safa nor the (Senegalese federation) are accused of any wrongdoing.’’

Arendse also said that Safa will agree on a replay if the World Cup qualifier was deliberately manipulated, adding all Group D matches should be replayed if that was to be the case.

Without that win over Senegal, the total points for South Africa, who are last-placed in Group D, will drop from four to one and trail third-placers Senegal by four points.

Leading the group are Burkina Faso with six points, just up via goal difference over second-running Cape Verde.

In that match held at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Ghanaian referee Lamptey awarded South Africa a questionable penalty shot for a non-existent handball before allowing another goal to stand from a quickly-taken free-kick while he was ordering Senegalese players to back off.

Lamptey’s ban will be subject for confirmation by the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions on the September 14 gathering.
