Madrid, Man Utd collide in blazing Macedonia in UEFA Super Cup

The heat wave currently kissing the country of Macedonia is the perfect complement to the awaited match between Real Madrid and Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup at Philip II National Arena.

Madrid, winners of last year’s Champions League, will open their season against United, who lifted their first ever Europa League trophy last term.

Despite a shaky pre-season where they lost three of four friendlies, the Blancos are still backed to beat United and win their second straight Super Cup at 2.02 because Zinedine Zidane’s side evolves into a different monster in competitive matches. Just ask Juventus, who were supposed to be the defensive juggernaut but suffered a 1-4 humiliation at the hands of Madrid in the UCL final.

United are not that far in the betting and are priced at 3.83 in 1×2, which is understandable since they won four of their last five friendlies, including when they bet Madrid on penalties in this year’s International Champions Cup.

The last time the Blancos and the Red Devils met in a serious match was in 2013, when Madrid beat United 3-2 over two legs, including a 2-1 conquest at Old Trafford.

Both teams have evolved since then, with Madrid winning three of the last four Champions League trophies, and United going through three different managers over that period.

It’s true that Jose Mourinho is starting to give direction to United’s rebuild, but they are far from the level of Zidane and Madrid.

Embattled Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is in top form and ready to play, according to Zidane, though with the 32-year-old star facing off-pitch he might be given the day off.

Ronaldo recently appeared on a Spanish court to answer charges on tax issues, but is made available to play against his old team.

“There have been a lot of things happening, a lot of noise around him as always, but he is relaxed,” says Zidane of his talisman.

“What impresses me the most about him is that physically he is just as he was on the day of the Champions League final, which was two months ago now. The fact he is here with us means a lot because if he is with us he is here to play.”
