Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has played down criticism of his poor away form in response to claims he only produces at Anfield.

The Netherlands international has enjoyed a steady start to life in England, scoring 15 goals since he left PSV Eindhoven in July 2015.

He originally joined Newcastle United but he decided to move on once the club were relegation to the Championship.

All of his goals at the Magpies and Reds have come on home soil, with his last away goal coming back in May 2015.

He netted in his final game for PSV against Den Haag but the 26-year-old believes his record is being over analysed.

Wijnaldum scored in the 3-1 win over Arsenal last weekend and he insists the team’s record should mean more than his own.

He said: “That is people’s opinion. I think I also play good in away games, especially this season.

“It is funny because last season we didn’t perform at a level as a whole team in away games for Newcastle but I was the only one who got the complaints.

“It is a team thing and no-one can do it by themselves. People expect more from you than other players but we have to be realistic.

“If a whole team doesn’t perform you cannot pick one player especially and say ‘He doesn’t do this or do that’. It is a fault of the whole team if you don’t deliver.”

The Reds are next in action on Sunday when they welcome Burnley to Anfield and Wijnaldum is 3.50 to score at anytime in the contest.
