Los Angeles Lakers boss Darvin Ham calls for a bit more urgency from the players as they push for playoffs

During the early days when Darvin Ham joined the Los Angeles Lakers as a coach, the front office and even the players including LeBron James and Anthony Davis said that they should give the new coach time and also allow the players gel and get to know more about the coach and the players and also about the organization. But with time things have not been great for the Purple and Gold as they are struggling in 13th position in the Western Conference with an underwhelming record of 20-25 and even qualifying for the playoffs looks tough with their constant injury issues and inconsistency in defense.

Earlier the excuses of taking time to gel and getting to know the process worked but as days went by, the fans are also not happy with how the team has played this season. It was mostly been on LeBron James as Anthony Davis started off in grand fashion but has missed a lot of action due to injury and has left the defense totally vulnerable. Russell Westbrook was very much criticized by the experts but since he has taken the bench role he has done fairly well for the Lakers.

Despite several glaring issues on the roster, the Lakers front office has not made any moves this summer. They once wanted to ship out Westbrook but did not get the value they were looking for. But it may still be an option on the trade deadline, who knows.

Ham shares that only 37 games are left and his team needs to wake up if they want to make it to the postseason. “We’re sitting here 20-25, we have 37 games left to play to try to get things right. But we just can’t keep doing it the first week of February or the first week of March.”

He feels that they need to look at the things that they have done right and also at things that they have not done right and work accordingly. “It has to start now. We’re gonna pick ourselves up, fill our cups and look at it, see what we did well and try to sustain that and see what we didn’t do so well and try to correct that,” he added.

While the longest winning streak for the Lakers have been of five games whereas they have had two five game losing streaks as well. So it has not been easy for them to win consistently this season. The inconsistency in the team boils down to the poor chemistry and his players’ inability to hit shots from beyond the arc.

The three point shooting has been a major problem for them for sometime this season and at one stage they started improving but then injuries started hindering their progress. Missing out Anthony Davis is a huge disadvantage mainly due to his impact on the court. Also Davis has already missed 20 out of 45 games and it is tough for any coach to build a team without one of your best players. So Ham will hope Davis returns sooner than later and elevate this team’s performance.
