Martin Caceres excited by Southampton challenge

Martin Caceres

Martin Caceres is looking to hit the ground running at Southampton after joining the Premier League outfit on a free transfer earlier this week.

The Uruguay international had been without a club since leaving Juventus during the summer, but he has now put-pen-to-paper on a deal that will see him remain at St Mary’s until the end of the season at least.

The 29-year-old has a wealth of experience after also playing for the likes of Barcelona and Sevilla, and he is likely to provide much-needed cover to the Saints’ back-line with Jose Fonte having left the club during the January transfer window and Virgil van Dijk currently sidelined with an ankle injury.

Caceres, who rejected the chance to join AC Milan in favour of a move to the south coast, believes he has made the right decision by joining Claude Puel’s side, and he is looking forward to getting started with his new team-mates.

“I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football. I am looking forward to getting started with my new team-mates,” Caceres told the club’s official website.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”

The centre back could make his debut for Southampton during the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26, although he is unlikely to start the contest due to his lack of match fitness.

Southampton are priced at 3.00 to secure their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1976, while United are available at 1.40 to claim their fifth League Cup crown.
