Mauricio Pochettino expecting Vincent Janssen to kick on

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is confident that striker Vincent Janssen will soon prove his worth at White Hart Lane.

The Dutchman was signed by Spurs in the summer, with the North London outfit paying AZ Alkmaar £17.5million for his services.

He has scored just one goal in the Premier League in 19 appearances but Janssen must now step up after Harry Kane suffered another injury.

Kane missed seven weeks of the season in the autumn, but Janssen could only score three goals outside of the league, all from the penalty spot.

He scored in the 6-0 win over Millwall in the FA Cup earlier this month and he is confident he can now prove his worth.

He told reporters: “It’s true that in some period of the season his form was down. He needed a wake-up call to be reminded that the possibility of playing could arrive.

“He is very young. He came from Holland. I’m happy with him and all the players, but I understand they are not happy with some situations.

“He is okay, he is motivated, confident and feeling a little bit of relief after his first goal from open play and that is important. I am happy in the way that he trained this week too.

“Players are training hard every day to try and find their best form, but every weekend they do not find too much possibility to play. Always we say they need to be professional, but they are only human and it is very tough to come in every day, it’s very complicated.”

Janssen will be hoping to fire when Spurs take on Southampton on Sunday, with Pochettino’s men the 1.70 favourites and the draw priced at 3.80, while the Saints are available at 5.25.
