Top flight clubs march on in DFB Pokal 1st Round

Borussia Dortmund

After the first round, only three Bundesliga clubs got whacked by the upset axe in the 2017-2018 DFB Pokal season.

Defending champions Borussia Dortmund made short work of Rielasingen-Arlen 4-0 at Schwarzwald Stadium, where defender Marc Bartra ignited the rout with the 12th minute opener and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang piled on with a hat-trick.

Last season’s runners-up Bayern Munich were more ruthless, as they destroyed 3.Liga’s Chemnitzer FC 5-0 at community4you Arena thanks to a double from Robert Lewandowski and one goal each from Kingsley Coman, Franck Ribery and Mats Hummels.

Of the 18 Bundesliga clubs in the competition, only Augsburg, Darmstadt 98, and Hamburger SV suffered losses against inferior competition and will not reach the second round.

Augusburg lost 0-2 in their visit to 3.Liga’s Magdeburg at MDCC Arena, while Darmstadt bowed down to 2.Bundesliga’s Jahn Regensburg 1-3 at Continental Arena, and Hamburger got stunned 1-3 by 3.Liga’s Osnabruck at osnatel ARENA.

Other top flight clubs escaped unscathed, as RB Leipzig thrashed Spfr. Dorfmerkingen 5-0, and Koln drubbed Leher TS 5-0 and Werder Bremen dominated Wurzburger Kickers 3-0.

But some big teams had difficulties reaching the second round, including Bayer Leverkusen, who needed extra time to dispatch Karlsruher SC 3-0, and Mainz 05, who needed two goals in the second half to put away LSK Hansa 3-1.

The draw for the second half will be held on August 20, while the fixtures will be played in late October.
