Wolfsburg need `miracle’ to bring down mighty Bayern

Bayern Munich facing Wolfsburg is akin to Goliath taking on David.

So if Wolfsburg wins this Bundesliga meeting between both sides, that will be an upset of biblical proportion.

But judging from their past five meetings, Bayern the Goliath would be hard to topple.

They have already met twice this term with Bayern winning 5-0 in the reverse league meeting last December and 1-0 in the DFB Pokal tie last February.

Looking deeper in their three other previous encounters, it’s all Bayern all the way.

All told, Wolfsburg have lost 22 of their total 23 meetings against Bayern at the Allianz Arena, but this match at the Volkswagen Arena will give them some encouragement to cause an upset.

And if there’s one man whom Wolfsburg can lean on, it’s former Munich striker Mario Gomez, who has scored three goals in his last four matches.

He will be up though against an array of star players Munich would unleash in this visit.

One is Robert Lewandowski, currently second in the league scoring table. Then there are veteran Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller, Arturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara, Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer among others.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men were slowed down by back-to-back draws at Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 and against Mainz 2-2.

Despite that, they remain ahead of the pack, leading by eight points over closest chasers RB Leipzoig by eight points, 70-62, after 30 matches.

On the other hand, Wolfsburg are teetering on the brink of relegation. They are at 14th spot with 33 points.

Andries Jonker’s side won just once (3-0 at home over Ingolstadt) in their last five league games, while suffering three losses and managing one draw.

For this fixture, all the odds are stacked in Bayern’s favour.

Wolfsburg need more than a miracle and a huge backing from the football gods to bring down a mighty giant like Bayern.
